Without that, finding freedom within a committed relationship will continue to be a struggle. Here are a series of questions to help you objectively question the assumptions that create your behaviors.

Let the mental probing begin! As children, we look to our parents as our relationship role models; later, we may look to our extended family and to our friends. If you lacked a relationship role model like I did, it will be difficult to know what real intimacy looks like.

Which means, you may be carrying a number of beliefs that undermine your relationship-building efforts. Based on these beliefs, we all follow an interaction pattern, a story we act out, but are rarely conscious of. Until you know the specific kind of freedom you want, you will hate having to let go of any possibility. There are many types of freedom available to you and different identities you could adopt: the wanderer, the inventor, the trickster, the critic.

It is only through a process of experimentation that you will become clear on which is you. Ultimately, you are searching for a reliable way to be consistently creative, in whatever way matters to you. What sort of stability do you need in your life to make your form of creative expression possible? What freedoms may you need to give up to be in a long term relationship? How does that feel? One of the hardest things about being an ENTP is the constant search for a clear-and-fixed identity.

As overwhelming as it is, we still are more likely to explore for our work or career than in our relationships. For many years, I labored under the false belief that I had only a limited role to play in a relationship, to show up, and the other person had to do the rest. It took me a long time to realize that while I had invested countless hours into finding an authentic career, I had devoted next-to-no time to exploring my identity in a relationship. So, how to build intimacy when we are so good at objectivity?

Mental hacking. Take your assumptions about what a relationship should be and flip them on their head. Here are a few ideas. Humans are weird and wonderful creatures prone to irrational behavior, especially in relationships. Personally, I gravitated towards attachment theory and love languages. Tip: Find a framework that explains human behavior in relationships, and play with it in the real world. The moment we meet someone, we are evaluating then against a range of criteria.

This will get you nowhere but in knots. Ignore them and make your own simple, one word criteria. Yes, one word. What is the one thing you would like more of in your life this year? For me, it was around having fun. Tip: What do you want more of in your life this year? What is your one word? Does this person help you create that? Trust your instincts. I do so love a new project—full of energy, time, devotion, a desire to make something better than it was before.

The problems come when your projects are more exciting than your relationship. So, think of your relationship like a project. It may seem inappropriate, but try it anyway.

NPs learn through feedback from experiments, in this case, social experiments. Quick and responsive feedback really energizes us and helps us understand something, which in turn helps us feel more connected to it or them.

Without feedback, we struggle to create the connection that helps us to build intimacy. Which means, any kind of physical or emotional distance is going to make it even harder to build a sustainable connection. You need someone who will be quite responsive to your requests for interaction.

If you can understand them in a variety of contexts, the deeper the connection will be. Tip: Assess the level of responsiveness and distance in your relationship. Go on as many adventures together as possible. It takes something special for us to commit. Here are some things to watch out for when you are having this debate with yourself.

You need to find the person they are now just as interesting as the person they could become. When you step back and look at the bigger picture of your relationship, are your lives coming together or remaining compartmentalized? While you value honesty, until you have developed skills in intimacy, you will struggle to find the balance between telling the truth and preserving the relationship.

Too much of either is unsustainable. Check in with yourself. What have you been unnecessarily honest about? Intimacy can be a blind spot for ENTPs, and the key to a lasting relationship comes from better understanding our own mental wiring.

That means developing an understanding of our personal relationship framework, and what we need to give and receive from a relationship.

Then, my friends, it's about developing a practice of intimacy. Samantha is the Lead Trainer at Truity and will shortly be a certified Enneagram Coach. She believes our personality is the key to navigating life's strangest hurdles.

Despite her best efforts Samantha is an ENTP and Enneagram 7, who is always surrounded by a pile of books, a steaming cup of tea and a block of her favourite chocolate.

Samantha is currently studying with Beatrice Chestnut and Uranio Paes of CP Enneagram Academy undertaking their Professional Enneagram Certification. Currently located in Auckland, New Zealand. He believes strongly in the importance of self-care, good friendships, and humor whenever possible. I'm a 46 year old female ENTP that didn't know it for a long time. I wish I had your insights at your age. Love it. Im an ENTP - 7 too, and I cant believe how accurate you're being at poking the wholes on the way we approach relationships. I've read a ton of articles online but this is IT! Having us ponder on those questions is the best way to figure this out. Very much appreciated.

I didn't full appreciate what it meant to be a Seven at the time I wrote this, so it's a good reminder to see how much my approach to being an ENTP is coloured by my Sevenness. This independence does not mean anything negative against their partner, since they often enjoy coming back and sharing these things with them. They want honesty in their relationships and often enjoy being able to share their more intimate thoughts and feelings with someone.

ENTPs are even capable of being romantic with their partners, especially with the right person. If this person gives the ENTP the freedom they need, and makes them feel comfortable being themselves, then they will feel much different with them. The ENTP is likely to make romantic gestures and go out of their way to make their loved one feel special.

They know how to be charming and sweet more than most people realize, simply because they see what is on the surface. ENTPs really want to be able to experience things firsthand in their lives, so that they can learn from these things. In order to figure out what they want from a partner they might need to date for a while, without any serious intent behind it.

Just getting to know different people and seeing where their own limitations and boundaries are, can help them a lot. To some this makes them seem afraid of commitment, but the truth is the ENTP just wants to learn more about themselves.

They need to explore their options before they can commit to one thing. ENTPs want to experience things freely before they make the choice which is best for them and their futures. ENTPs are often very attracted to a quiet confidence, not someone who is boastful but someone who holds themselves with a sense of inner strength. They enjoy people who can think for themselves and who have their own unique way of viewing things.

They can become bored by things easily, even people at times. When they can actually learn from this person or have their own ways challenged, the ENTP is often naturally attracted to this about someone else. ENTPs do want to be with someone who challenges them and keeps them guessing. They want to feel like their partner is inspiring growth and this is honestly thrilling and intriguing for the ENTP. While they are attracted to these mysterious qualities, they are also attracted to someone who is capable of being compassionate and warm.

Someone who is affectionate is often more appealing to the ENTP than even they might realize at first. ENTP Flirting ENTPs can actually be rather flirtatious people, since they are naturally outgoing and playful.

In their relationships too, they bring the same quickness of understanding, resourcefulness and the love of challenge which makes them hugely energetic and intelligent partners. If you are dating an ENTP, here are a few things to keep in mind for a satisfying relationship. TIP: Read this book which has questions you can ask your partner. Know your partner's secret desires and hidden fears with this book! Indulge their love of debate Like all personalities of the Extroverted type, ENTPs too love being around people.

In their case however, the socializing often takes the form of verbal interaction so that ENTPs are known to derive great thrill from discussing and debating about ideas, concepts and theories.

Very often they get so carried away by their love of discussion that they can seem argumentative and unable to let go of a point until it has been well and truly driven home. So if you want to make sure that your ENTP partner enjoys a date with you, think of spending an evening at a debating club or at a philosophical convention where their keen minds can range through ideas and abstractions.

Even a heated discussion at a bar among friends who are passionate about ideas and causes would make for an enjoyable evening for an ENTP. Above all, brush up on your reading since few things delight ENTPs as a fruitful debate or a lively discussion on topics of common interest. Challenge them intellectually The Thinking aspect of the ENTP personality type is also reflected in their keen analytical mind and their love of solving problems.

Few things hold their interest as strongly as a task that needs to be solved or a project which others find it impossible to complete. So if you are stuck indoors on a rainy evening, bring out your chess board and challenge your ENTP to a game.

Jigsaw puzzles, word puzzles and conundrums are especially enjoyable activities for ENTPs which satisfy their need for critical analysis as well as their love of verbal ingenuity. Interestingly, while applying themselves to a problem ENTPs are unlikely to do the same thing in the same way the second time round.

They like to come up with new and interesting ways of solving problems and will often ignore norms and precedents. Also in their problem-solving, they are much more likely to depend on their ingenuity and spontaneous inspiration rather than a good deal of planning and preparation.

Among other activities which are equally likely to engage ENTPs are competitive sports, computer games, adventure travel and cultural events. The best part of their desire to engage with people and circumstances around them is that they do it without evaluating others on a moral scale. The Perceiving aspect of their personality type makes ENTPs open-minded and easy-going so that they try to understand others —their motivations, behaviors and feelings — without applying judgment.

The thing to remember is that in a relationship, they expect the same from their partners. If you are overly critical or find too many faults with your ENTP lover, it is possible that they will drift away from this relationship to one which is more pleasant and accommodating. They dislike conflict and stress in a relationship and thrive best where there is harmony and greater positivity. Be patient The keen and analytical mind of ENTPs makes them take great satisfaction in examining every detail of their lives including their intimate relationships.

More often than not they are deeply interested in questions like: How can the relationship be improved? Where is the relationship headed? Am I growing in the relationship? To partners who are protective of their privacy and are of the introverted type, such constant attention to the dynamics of a relationship may seem a bit obsessive and overwhelming. But on the brighter side, this tendency of ENTPs reveals their emotional investment and enthusiasm in a romantic relationship which makes them open to new ideas and projects for themselves and their mates so that they are led to their goal of growth and self-discovery in a relationship.

Yet another potential problem area for ENTPs in romantic relationships is that they tend to lose focus rather quickly. Because of their curious and energetic natures, ENTPs quickly get involved with several projects but then are unable to follow through with all their schemes. This tendency to leave commitments mid-way can sometimes be frustrating to partners.

So if you are dating an ENTP, you may be familiar with a situation where they have promised to accompany you to an art exhibition while also volunteering to help at the community library and again promising to repair the dishwasher at their parents — all on the same day. Their impractical nature often leads them to take impulsive decisions where finances are concerned and even go for unnecessary risks, creating a stressful situation in committed relationships like marriages.

Thus partners of ENTPs not only need to have patience with their impulsive and multiple involvements, they also need to gently push them to a more practical way of arranging their commitments.

Great intimacy Sexually ENFPs make one of the most ingenious and caring lovers. Their emotional investment in the relationship and their constant search to improve things between you two will make them look for new ways to please you in bed.

Other than that their warm and generous natures also bring a great deal of affection and nurturing in an intimate relationship. Overall ENFPs are ideal for a healthy, mutually supportive relationship where growth and improvement are highly valued.
